    Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen SUV

The 2023 Hyundai Nexo is a compact SUV with a hydrogen-powered drivetrain, otherwise known as a fuel cell vehicle. It is available solely in California. The Nexo is distinguished from the vast sea of SUVs by its hydrogen-fuel cell electric powertrain. The Nexo’s 95-kW fuel-cell stack and 40-kWh battery pack power an electric motor rated at 161 horsepower with 291 pound-feet of torque. The motor drives the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox; all-wheel drive is not available. The Nexo has an estimated range of 380 miles and zero emissions. The highly aerodynamic shape was also designed to have a low drag coefficient, which helps increase the driving range.

    Price

The pricing for the 2023 Hyundai Nexo starts at $60,135. The average price paid for a new 2023 Hyundai NEXO Blue 4dr SUV (electric (fuel cell) DD) is trending $1,348 below the manufacturer’s MSRP. The Nexo’s hydrogen fuel cell powertrain provides emissions-free driving but the nascent technology comes at a high price and California-only availability.

    Specifications

The Nexo’s fuel cell stack and battery pack power an electric motor rated at 161 horsepower with 291 pound-feet of torque. The motor drives the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox; all-wheel drive is not available. The Nexo has an estimated range of 380 miles and zero emissions. The Nexo is equipped with safety features such as forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and lane-departure warning.

    Availability

The Nexo is only available in California due to the nonexistent infrastructure, with hydrogen fueling stations hard if not impossible to find outside of California. Hyundai has delayed the launch of the next generation of Nexo to 2024 due to the pandemic.

    Comparison with Other Fuel-Powered Vehicles

The Nexo is a well-equipped, well-executed compact SUV that’s a pleasure to drive. The only other fuel cell vehicle is the Toyota Mirai sedan (with a maximum range of 402 miles) which starts at $49.5K. To go fully electric, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is priced at $41.5K.

    Conclusion

The 2023 Hyundai Nexo is a revolutionary hydrogen fuel-powered SUV with an estimated range of 380 miles and zero emissions. However, the high price and California-only availability make it a relatively niche product. The Nexo is a well-equipped, well-executed compact SUV that’s a pleasure to drive. The Nexo is a step towards a cleaner and greener future, but the infrastructure for hydrogen fueling stations needs to be expanded beyond California to make it more accessible to the masses.
